Last Monday 12 June we had 3 very successful Kick-off meetings of the Minor Global Health 2017. After a general introduction on the Minor Global Health, logistics, vaccinations etc., students had break-out sessions with last year's MHG2016 students to discuss do's and don'ts while abroad. Very inspiring ;) In the meantime, housing is being arranged, flights are being booked, vaccinations have started. So ready to go!

Because of logistic reasons, we decided to extend the application deadline for the Minor Global Health 2017 once again. New DEADLINE is now MONDAY 22 MAY 8.59 hrs. CET!!

The Application Deadline of the Minor Global Health 2017 has been changed to Friday 19th May 23.59 hrs CET! Because the new registration & application process t akes more time and because evaluating your applications has become easier, we decided to extend the deadline until Friday. And do not worry too much about ECTS etc.! Just apply & travel with us and become a real Doctor of the World. 😁

This fifth Masterclasses will be on 'The Discovery of HIV/AIDS' by Nobel Prize laureate Professor Francoise Barré-Sinoussi, moderated by Professor Ab Osterhaus. Françoise Barré-Sinoussi was born in July 1947 in the 19th arrondissement of Paris. She is research Director of Exceptional Grade at Inserm (French National Institute of Health and Medical Research) and Professor at the Institut Pasteur where she was the Director of the "Regulation of Retroviral Infections" Unit until August 2015. She has been Involved in retrovirology research since she first began working at the Institut Pasteur as a contract worker in 1971. At the time she was studying the relationship between retroviruses and cancers in mice, in particular, the use of a synthetic molecule, named HPA23, which inhibited reverse transcriptase to control leukaemia induced by the Friend virus. After she obtained her PhD from the Faculty of Science (University of Paris) in 1974, she spent a year ...

This second Masterclasses will be on 'What puts Cuba on the map in the quest for Global Health ....' In this Masterclass we will examine the remarkable case of Cuba, a poor country with what the BBC calls "one of the world's best health systems," and explores Cuba's extensive global health initiatives with 28,000 Cuban health professionals now staffing public health systems in over 60 countries. Their stories, and those of young medical students-now numbering 30,000-from the Americas, Africa and Asia studying in Cuba, challenge us to rethink the potential of international health cooperation. The fourth Masterclasses will be on 'Working in Global Health: Essential Medicines' by Professor Hans Hogerzeil.  Hans Hogerzeil currently is Professor of Global Health at Groningen University (Netherlands). After working as a mission doctor, he joined the WHO Action Programme of Essential Drugs in 1985 and was the Director for Essential Medicines and Pharmaceutical Policies from 2008 to 2011. The third Masterclasses will be on 'Research Capacity Building in LMICs & Research in Humanitarian Crises' by Professor Ogobara Doumbo & Professor Constance Schultsz. Professor Ogobara Doumbo is Head of the Department of Epidemiology of Parasitic Diseases and Director of Malaria Vaccines Programmes at MRTC-ICER NIAID-Mali Programmes Prof Constance Schultsz is a specialist in medical microbiology. She is an Executive Board member of the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD) and deputy head of the Department of Global Health. Constance worked as a research fellow at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 1987 – 1989. From 2003 until 2008 she headed the Microbiology department of the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit, Vietnam, at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where she still holds a Faculty position. This first Masterclasses on will be on 'Global Health in Rotterdam by Professor Lex Burdorf and Professor Semiha Denktas. Lex Burdorf is Professor in Determinants of Public Health at Erasmus MC. Semiha Denktas studies environmental, personal, and behavioural characteristics to explain why and how behaviours change, with a focus on vulnerable groups in society.  Together they will discuss determinants of health inequalities in Rotterdam, a city with more than 170 ethnicities represented. They will also discuss Rotterdam's and Erasmus University's recently announced joint response 'Rotterdam Vitale Stad' to tackle these health inequalities. Three years before passing away, he remarked that the one thing that had surprised him the most during his tenure as a global educator was that he became so famous – despite having so little influence over people’s real knowledge. He realized he was stuck in ”persona hell”, and that people remained ignorant at a level worse than random guessing when they took Gapminder’s tests. Not because of a lack of knowledge, but because of ”an actively upheld ignorance”. He had discovered that people actively had set their minds to remaining ignorant. Hans Rosling had devoted decades to try to throw out our Tintin-like perspective, but kept on having to say ”wrong, wrong, wrong” when the Swedish people answered the question of how many children are born per woman in Bangladesh. Erasmus MC Minor Market The Erasmus MC Minor Market will be organized on Friday 3 March from 3.30-6.00 PM in our Education Center. Dr. Joke Tulen, Erasmus MC Minor Coordinator will kick-off with a introductory lecture (3.30-4.00 PM) in lecture hall 1/2. The Minor Market itself will start at 4.00PM in Erasmsu MC's Education Center. And of course Minor Global Health will be there to show you where you can go in 2017. Global Health is ' hot'. Even in a world where wars, terrorism, fundamentalism and racism so often seem to dictate the world news and social media, if you stick to the data the world really is a better place then 25 years ago. A world with less poverty, better health, better education, better everything really.
